CAME FOR THE MERCEDES – LEFT IN A POLICE VAN

Canada, Durham Region. October 8, a 39-year-old from Brampton arrived at a dealership to pick up a 2027 Mercedes-Benz SUV. She didn't leave in it.

The scheme: September 30, an online auto loan application. In the package – a Canadian passport: her photo, someone else's data. The loan was approved. The document worked.

The failure came at the finish line: she showed up for the car in person. On camera, face to face with live documents. The dealership turned out to be the final checkpoint.

The card design is fresh, 2023 revision. But inside the barcode sits data built to the 2013 AAMVA standard. The system cross-checks the standard version, and the file dies at upload.

PDF417 isn't a picture – it's a data package with its own firmware. Standard version, field order, state codes – all of it dates a barcode more precisely than a passport stamp.

In the original document letters breathe unevenly. The pairs AV, To, Wa are fitted by hand – state fonts carry their own seating logic, nothing like a word processor.

The system measures letter spacing pairwise, pixel by pixel. A stock font lays letters flat and even – and that evenness sounds like a siren.

Kerning is the document's handwriting. Every country, every revision has its own. Copy a font from the internet and you've copied someone else's handwriting, not this one.
