Looking to rent a car in Sweden, any advice? - Lyrynx - 04-04-2026 My grandmother on my mom's side was Swedish, though she was born here in the States. I've always wanted to see where my ancestors actually lived before they came over. Finally decided I'm doing it this year, booked some time off and started planning the whole thing. I'll need a car to drive around and visit those places. How does renting work in Sweden? Are the roads decent? What paperwork do I need to bring? RE: Looking to rent a car in Sweden, any advice? - Dodger - 04-04-2026 Sounds like a solid trip, man. Tracing family roots hits different when you're actually standing where they stood. Honestly the roads there put ours to shame, even the back routes connecting tiny villages are smooth as hell. Your regular license should work at most places, some companies get picky and want the international permit but that's hit or miss. Just make sure whatever card you're using has room for the deposit hold, they lock up a chunk of money until you bring the car back. RE: Looking to rent a car in Sweden, any advice? - Modenit - 04-04-2026 The landscape out in the countryside is incredible, forests and lakes everywhere you look. You'll be covering real distance though if you're visiting multiple villages where your family lived. One thing that'll catch you off guard is how strict they are with speeding, cameras everywhere and the tickets show up on your card through the rental company with their fees added on. Also legally you drive with your headlights on all the time, even in the middle of summer when the sun's out. You can check car rental options in Sweden here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/sweden . Lots of smaller companies and people renting out their own cars, prices are way lower than Hertz or Enterprise at the airport. You'll save a ton compared to the big chains.
